| What is the United Way? To a woman dealing with Alzheimer's disease, it's learning about dealing with the disease, finding a strong support group and obtaining specific individualized therapy. To a family without health insurance, it's a way to provide free or reduced cost health care for their children and adults. To middle to lower income individuals and families, it's free federal income tax filing help through Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) specifically geared to helping with the deductions that may be available to them. To families, especially children with not enough to eat, it's tens of thousands of meals, the food pantry at F.I.S.H., meal delivery for the home-bound, and backpacks for children filled with nutritious meals.
United Way makes a real difference in the lives of our friends and neighbors. Our agencies help people with emergencies such as the Red Cross helping a family after a fire. But we really focus on making a long term difference in the lives of those in need.
United Way of Lee, Hendry,Glades and Okeechobee helps human service agencies who serve over 300,000 people in our community every year. One gift to the United Way, instead of many smaller gifts to different non-profits, makes giving easy. Donors can give with confidence to the United Way because the United Way Allocations process carefully monitors the programs and agencies to ensure making the most of each gift.
