In 2009, the United Way of Pickens County adopted a new model that represents a change in focus and a shift in philosophy of United Way. It stems from an effort to address the root causes of the issues that affect our community rather than simply taking a "band-aid" approach to meeting the needs of community members in times of individual crisis. The long-term goal approach is to see a reduction in the need for basic "charity" -type services through a focus on education and financial stability. The United Way funding process now places a stronger emphasis on the outcomes of each proposed program to ensure that dollars are put towards resolving the most pressing issues and addressing the greatest needs in Pickens County. We believe that education and development of our children and youth is essential to building the leaders of tomorrow and ensuring our children have the life skills necessary to reach their highest potential. We also believe that assisting individuals with job training, financial literacy and employment opportunities is vital to helping people gain and maintain a job at a livable wage, have adequate income to pay for today's necessities and save for the future. Recognizing that there will always be a need for programs that offer assistance with basic needs (food, clothing, shelter,etc.), United Way of Pickens County will continue to fund this type of service.
