United, we are stronger! We link the gifts of caring people in our community – time, resources and talents – with the transforming work of United Way. For over 90 years, Heart of West Michigan United Way has taken a leadership role in mobilizing resources of individuals, companies, government and labor to achieve positive and lasting change in the lives of people in our community.
All populations in our community are touched through United Way funding, including the tiniest babies and the most vulnerable, older senior citizens. Everyone needs a place to turn when faced with tough times, and United Way is often at the core of our community's most important programs to help people in need. Our support of 116 local programs operated by 51 nonprofit agencies ensures help for people who fall through the cracks. Our support also helps people who always gave back to the community in the past, but due to today's tough times, are now faced with asking for help.
United Way Programs
- 2-1-1, a resource to get help and to give help: When you have a problem, a question or simply don't know where to turn, call United Way's 2-1-1 (or 616.459.2255).
- Free tax preparation: The Kent County Tax Credit Coalition helps low- to moderate-income people complete income tax returns and apply for the federal Earned Income Tax Credit.
- Schools of Hope: In just 30 minutes a week, volunteers can transform a child's life. We have a waiting list of children who need reading volunteers.
- Volunteer Center: We can match the talents of individuals and groups with volunteer opportunities through Volunteer Solutions, an online matching tool.
Our Vision is a vibrant, safe and caring community where all children thrive and all people enjoy maximum health and self-sufficiency.
Mission: Heart of West Michigan United Way is a leader and community catalyst, mobilizing the caring power of individuals and organizations to help people measurably improve their lives.
